The Vision Australia Library plays an important part in the life of many people from the bind and low vision community, helping them to learn something new or escape into their favourite fictional world.

In this Q&A to mark Library Lovers' Day, volunteer Jenny Abela shares some of what she loves about the Vision Australia Library.

Q: Could you start off by telling us a little bit about yourself?

A: I’m a mad golf player. I have a Seeing Eye dog which I can’t do without. She is just a great help and great company and I love reading. I also love volunteering and am lucky to be volunteering in the Braille library here in Enfield.

Q: How long have you been a volunteer with the library and what do you enjoy the most?

A: I have been volunteering here since 2000 way back in the day of cassettes and now through to downloading books with the VA app. I think I enjoy being among the books and people here and I love volunteering to give back for all the help that Vision Australia have given to me and it just feels nice to be able to give something back and in an area that I love.

Q: Why do you prefer braille books over the audio books?

A: Braille is a hands on thing, I make use of braille in everyday life, apart from reading. It’s great to use braille to mark-up spices and your herbs, your medication. I even mark up my clothes and when I cook I like to be able to put my hands straight on a recipe. With Braille you can just find your place and put your hands on it and read it.

I also like sitting outside with a Braille book. Its total relaxation you just sit back, read your book, totally relax and dream away and just get into the book. I love it.

Q: What have you been reading lately and who is your favourite fictional couple for Library Lovers’ Day?

A: I’ve been reading Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series and it’s not a couple it’s more of a threesome, which is a little unusual. Stephanie, Joe and Ranger are my are my favourite lovers at the moment
